| Father Light Three o'clock on Friday at the grocery store alone Four, at my apartment, now my father light is on She drops off a suitcase full of weekend cloths and all the toys that will fit into a duffel bag some story books and the "I love Daddy" faces of two little kids I thought my father light would be turned on and always burning bright Shining every day So I don't get to play the part like I thought I might Well that's alright I will be okay I'll be okay We watch cartoons from the sofa on a lazy afternoon I breathe my fill of laughter and now I'm in heaven's room I can't help counting down the hours Two days go by so fast Sunday, back to mommy's Now they notice that daddy's quite at four o'clock every Sunday afternoon I thought my father light would be turned on and always burning bright Shining every day So I don't get to play the part like I thought I might Well that's alright I will be okay I'll be okay I drive twenty minutes back to my apartment where the next twelve days commence I turn off my father light and I get rid of the evidence I find Fruit Loops smiling up at me from the kitchen floor I cover up Crayola pictures on the refrigerator door And I swear I saw them run behind me in the reflection of the Big Bird spoon I stare straight ahead each time I walk by the bunk bed room I thought my father light would be turned on and always burning bright Shining every day So I don't get to play the part like I thought I might Well that's alright I will be okay I'll be okay © 1998 Jerome Mayne |
